Words by Arielle M. Myers
‘Conversational prints.’ It’s a term in design and retail that gets thrown around a lot these days; but what kind of conversation do these prints typically garner? Small talk, at best. If you really want to have a conversation - wear a piece from our newest designer, Supra Endura, and see what transpires.
Supra Endura is a clothing line that questions the ethics of consumerism, and seeks to provide a high-quality and socially conscious alternative to fast fashion. Each piece opens up a dialogue about trends in art and fashion as well as in various societal issues from education to ocean conservation. Each piece hopes to provide both monetary support and awareness to the causes it funds.
“Each season I look at what is going on in both the fashion world and the world at large. I start researching non-profits that I feel a connection with who are doing great work for their community. Then I act like a mad scientist in Photoshop, tweaking images until I feel I have created something unique that can artistically represent the causes.”
In February of 2013 the line’s creator, Gabrielle Mandel, decided to take the industry experience she earned working in New York on the road. Back in her native Pennsylvania, she joined the Philadelphia Fashion Incubator program where she works in a shared studio alongside five other local talents. Gabrielle draws inspiration from both natural and industrial settings and likes to juxtapose the two in her work. While each print intends to represent the cause for which they stand, they are masterfully abstracted into delicate and ephemeral motifs.
“I have always been inspired by how social artists blur the line between something that is beautiful and something that is beneficial. I always knew I wanted to have my own clothing line, but I knew I wanted to do something that told a greater story then just the clothes. ”
We’re in a serious love affair with Supra Endura because the company shares so many of our goals at Young & Able, and we’re proud to share their first official collection with you this summer.
