Brooklyn-based designer Shana Luther founded her line of sturdy, minimalistic handbags out of a desire to create well-designed, high-quality leather bags made with thoughtfully sourced materials. Local manufacturing was also an important facet to the business; Shana sought to work with craftsmen NYC directly to hand-make each product and have direct control over production quality. She is dedicated to documenting this process and presenting a transparent shopping experience:
With the independent, confident urbanite in mind, Shana designs beautiful yet durable totes, wallets and accessories that have allowed her design philosophy to take form: a clean aesthetic with a modern sensibility. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Shana moved to Brooklyn 16 years ago to attend Pratt Institute to study fashion. She now calls Carroll Gardens home, where she dwells happily with her husband John and cat Tiggs.
After finding inspiration in the independent handbags being produced around her, Shana ran back to her studio to make her first prototype and eventually dreamed up her own line.
"Soon after, I was drafting patterns for many other styles I wanted to create. I worked on every stage of the production process from pattern making, sewing, marketing and selling. Now I work with a local manufacturer who cares just as much about the craftsmanship as I do."
With a knack for running her small business, Shana predicted the need for a larger production capability beyond her quaint studio and found local artisans to trust with cranking out her coveted bags. Now in her third season, as the business continues to grow, Shana continues to use luxurious materials of her choice while exploring new design ideas for her bags.
