After moving to NYC in 2009, Beckie Ryu worked in merchandising for a few years, but began itching to do something more creative. She realized it was about time to start designing again. With her husband as business partner, Beckie launched Ryu Ryu. Born in Seoul, Korea and raised in Orange California where she also attended FIDM for fashion design, one can see the influence of both cultures on Ryu Ryu's vision for sophisticated yet laid-back designs. With a clean aesthetic and a sense of easy elegance, Beckie designs clothes for the modern woman with versatility in mind, creating fresh pieces that can be worn in many ways throughout the seasons.
"We want to stay true in the purity of our products in both design and craft. We hope to achieve greater exposure as people recognize the quality of our garments and practicality of a minimalistic wardrobe."
Every Ryu Ryu garment is produced locally in NYC, a facet of the company Beckie and her husband have stood behind from the start. With the majority of people making fast and cheap fashion purchases, Beckie wants educate consumers about the importance of local production to sustaining quality and craft. They take pride in supporting local craftsmen and contributing to stable jobs in our community.
"Local production is important to me because I get to see the process from beginning to end. Not only are mistakes minimized, but we know exactly how every garment is manufactured and by whom. Also, many of the factory owners and workers have been in the industry for decades and have a wealth of information that's invaluable for emerging designers like myself."
Ryu Ryu's mission is also to donate a portion of their sales to feeding, clothing and supporting children in rural North Korea, through their partnership with the YPF
. Ultimately, it is through her charity work and faith that Beckie continues to find the inspiration and satisfaction in running her business season after season.
