MEET ANDRIA, THE DESIGNER BEHIND CRESCIONI, A LINE OF HANDCRAFTED LEATHER JEWELRY BASED IN CALIFORNIA:
TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF. WHERE ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM?
I’m a Southern California native and graduate from Parsons School of Design. I live in Los Angeles and work mostly in my studio in the Mount Washington area.
WHY THE INTEREST IN JEWELRY?
I studied fashion design at Parsons. My focus was mostly on apparel but in my last year I apprenticed with a designer named Jason Ross, who works predominately on leather and metal accessories. I really got hooked on working with leather as a medium and started experimenting with jewelry making.
WHAT WAS THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND STARTING YOUR OWN COLLECTION?
I decided to create something new in the market that was modern and minimal but rooted in traditional craft.
HOW, IF AT ALL, DOES YOUR JEWELRY REFLECT YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
The Crescioni pieces really complement my day-to-day style. I love wearing easy separates in natural fibers. They look great with a white button-up shirt and blue jeans or a simple black dress.
HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME INVOLVED WITH YOUNG & ABLE? WHAT DOES THE MISSION MEAN TO YOU AS A DESIGNER?
I appreciate that Rosa [Founder and Creative Director, Y&A] is showcasing independent designers who are striving to make quality goods.
CAN YOU ELABORATE ON YOUR PARTICULAR DESIGN PROCESS? WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH? WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU PREFER? WHO OR WHAT DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM? HOW DOES IT ALL COME TOGETHER?
When I’m developing new Crescioni pieces I usually start at the LA central library and get lost. I’m inspired by industrial design and modern sculpture- right now I’m obsessed with Martin Puryear and Carl Aubock. Then it’s a fluid combination of sampling and sketching until I’m satisfied with the piece. I'm inspired by my surroundings as well. I like to take a drive out to the desert or the mountains near my home when I need to clear my head and re-connect with nature.
