We sent Jess from Palermo Body
and Corina and Summer from Flynn & King
a few question to get some insight into what their daily skincare routines are like. Also they give us some great DIY beauty tips and tricks as well as owning an emerging business!
What is your daily skincare routine?
Jess: I wash my face once a day and it's usually at night, so in the morning I do what I call a "minute mask" which consists of the following:
I put a small amount of my Vitamin C Facial Mask into my palm and add enough water to make it thinner than if I was doing a full treatment, and then exfoliate my face for 45 to 60 seconds. I leave the mask on while I brush my teeth then rinse the mask off. I follow the mask with a few spritzes of my Hydrating Toner and Regenerative Facial Serum and that’s usually it.
Corina: Each morning and night, I use our Revive Oil-Based Cleanser, followed by our Balance Toner and Lunar 13 Serum. If I'm feeling especially dry, which is unfortunately a lot of the time, I'll also mix a little of our Replenish dry oil with a few drops of Organic Rosehip Seed Oil to hydrate, and the Replenish and Lunar 13 are very silky, and act as a great makeup primer as well. One or two days a week, I also use our Buff Exfoliant and Mask to get rid of any dry patches.
Are there any DIY or at home tips/tricks you use for your skin?
Jess: Raw honey has so many benefits it's a great ingredient for almost anything. Honey is a humectant so it will help draw moisture to the skin as well as being a gentle antiseptic helping to clear away irritation and blemishes. It's so easy found it's always in my home treatments I whip up.
Honey Hair Tip: mix equal parts honey and olive oil in a small sauce pan. Heat until warm and ingredients are fully incorporated. Apply as a hair mask to dry, damaged ends and leave for 30-60min. Rinse with your normal shampoo routine.
Corina: One tip that I learned many years ago and stand by, is to change your pillowcases frequently. All of the oil from your hair and skin is absorbed into the cotton and redistributed back onto your face as you sleep. If you tend to break out on your cheeks and jawline, try only using fragrance-free detergent and fresh pillowcases every 3-4 days, and you'll see a major improvement. It sounds like a pain, but when I change my pillowcases, I just put two on my pillow and about half-week, I pull the top one off and voila!
Also, drinking water is so important. That is the one thing that I can see a direct correlation to my skin health. If I'm slacking on my water intake, my skin really shows it.
What do you think the most common mistakes are that people make when caring for their skin?
Jess: Over cleansing. Your natural pH can be very sensitive and striping away your body's natural defenses by over washing with harsh detergents can cause breakouts, chronic dryness, or irritation.
Corina: I think the most common mistake is not reading your ingredients and knowing what you are applying to your skin. Many people read their food ingredients but completely ignore their cosmetic ingredients. Also, don't be afraid of oils! We were raised in a generation of oil-free and that is so ingrained in us that many, especially those with oily or acneic skin, are afraid of using oils. There is a huge difference between gross mineral oils created in a lab vs beautiful natural oils from trees, nuts and flowers like we use. I'm making it my personal mission to convert people back to using oils again, like our great-grandmas did!
What's the most challenging task you have to face so far with your small business?
Jess: Being original can be difficult in an ever changing saturated market but it's important to not take things personally and keep moving forward. Staying focused is hard when we literally have the world at our fingertips, but getting caught up in what others are doing isn't going to make you any more successful. Stay true to you.
Corina: There are not enough hours in the day! We are a small company of two, and we do everything from recipe creation and production to social media and marketing, and everything in between, so we could definitely use more hours or more hands! We are stubborn Capricorns and thrive on hard work though, so we love it!
