Explain the story behind the name.
Our business name went through many brainstorming sessions. We knew our line would have a strong design influence and that we wanted to have some sort of combination with candles. So “type” (short for typography) as a nod to our design backgrounds and “lites” for candles. The period between the two words was our way of merging the two and including a typographic element.
Can you elaborate on your design process? What is your workspace like? What materials do you prefer?
We are both blog and Instagram crazy and are always on the lookout for new inspiration. As graphic designers, we are constantly inspired by the design community and how it shifts. We love a good challenge which is why we thrive on keeping up with trends and staying innovative. If a project or design isn’t working and we’re feeling uninspired, we love having the creative autonomy to change things around and turn it into something great. We also appreciate the opinions of our peers, fellow business owners and customers. In terms of our workspace, it’s constantly a work in progress! We are always shifting things around and thinking of new ways to be more efficient. We’ve almost exclusively worked with soy wax and essential oil blends since type.lites began and have always looked for materials that have given us the right aesthetic or texture we are seeking. Of course, we love to repurpose materials, and that has influenced lots of our design choices, such as our packaging.
What struggles/obstacles have you faced so far?
Our biggest struggle, and an area where we’re constantly striving to better ourselves is time management. Over the course of the last four years, we’ve learned that “we can do anything, and not everything”. Differentiating between the two is SO important. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting to do everything at once and we’ve learned that the reality is it’s just not possible to do EVERYTHING. Prioritizing, delegating, dividing and conquering is the name of the game! Thus, our motto for 2015 is “work smarter, not harder”.
What does being Young & Able mean to you?
Being Young & Able means having the world at our fingertips. We’ve been able to evolve and make possible things that were never in our line of sight when we poured our first batch of candles back in 2010. Last year, we launched our cobalt candle line which was a tremendous step for us. Having a beautiful, well-designed luxury line was something we had always dreamed about so to see it come to fruition marked a huge milestone for our business. We also take pride in knowing that we built type.lites from the ground up. Just like any small business, we've definitely had our fair share of struggles, but we know that it’s all part of the process because to be young and able also means to be resilient. It’s about being grounded in who we are, what we want, and striving for greatness.
